Side-Line has a story
concerning Maverick Record's (Rental's label) financial status:
It's not going that well with Madonna's recordlabel
Maverick. While the company has fired its director Bill Bennett and five staffmembers, the
label is in big financial problems. The company urgently needs 50 million US$ to cover
losses. The main problem with Maverick is that it does not have a lot of hit bands signed
to its roster and those signed don't even release albums. It's namely the case of Alanis
Morissette and The Prodigy, two acts that aren't exactly quick in releasing new material.
This means that there's a possible danger that some acts will be dropped in the near
future including Erasure. Madonna's started up the label two years ago together with
Warner Music Group. ~side-line
Well guys, that is not good news. Let's hope The
Rentals don't get dropped. Well, Weezer went into hiding for 5 years & Geffen kept
them on the label, even after a merger with Interscope! Also, considering the fact that in
a label with many unknown artists (Maverick), The Rentals are one that some may recognize.
There isn't much else to say at the moment. Hopefully Maverick will hold on to the
band, and hopefully Matt is in the process of something big. I'll keep you updated.
Over at Jane's Weezer Board, this
interesting thread was posted.
Well, after numerous rumors that
The Rentals had been dropped from Maverick Records, we finally have, what seems like a
true answer. Maverick recently re-constructed their site, and added an interesting section
dedicated to the band. The short write-up on the page ends with, "Hey Wheezer came
back, maybe the Rentals will too someday." Yes, they spelled Weezer wrong. Click here for more...

Wow. I was just at www.therentals.net on Friday night. I tried to pull
it up today, and what do you know? The site's been deleted. What a coincedence. However,
if you go to www.therentals.com you
can find a different Rentals page, that was last updated in 1999, around the time Seven
More Minutes was released.
That site is managed by the label, Maverick, who since then has supposedly dropped
the band. www.therentals.net is ran
by Dan & Anuj from www.weezer.net. Since Matt and
crew are MIA, I would assume that they felt it was useless to keep the page up. Or maybe
they are giving the page a fresh look, and took it down for a while. Well, I'm not sure,
but I'm going to try and find out. More info soon!
The "Searching" section has been updated...

Look above! New sections added!
Check it out. More soon!

Well, welcome to Searching
For Sharp. Matt Sharp that is. After several successful years at bass with
Weezer, Sharp departed for The Rentals, his own band, which released Return Of The
Rentals, featuring the mild hit, Friends Of P. After a few years
of rest, The Rentals went back to the studio and recorded Seven More Minutes.
It was subject to mediocre reviews, and never received much attention from the public.
The last time we heard from Sharp was in October 2000, via a post at The Rentals official web site. The post stated that
Matt was writing, working on new projects, and would report more soon. Well, that was over
eight months ago. Numerous fans attemped to email Dan & Anuj (weezer.net,
therentals.net).
Well, flipping through posts at Jane's Weezer Board, I
learned that some had received replies from Dan, and or Anuj. The replies claimed that
Matt was writing new material. Well, we thought Matt was writing new material eight months
ago. Maybe he still is, maybe he's just taking a break from music, or maybe...well...we
just don't know. That's why this site has been created, to find Matt Sharp. We will post
the latest, news, rumors, anything related to Matt. I'll occasionally throw in a little
new information about Weezer too. Anything to help the cause. I know there isn't much here
yet, but as the days go by, there will be a comprehensive biography, pictures, and much
more. Until that happens, feel free to post on the message board, or email me. Thanks for your help...
